A group of staff members and student leaders were in the mood to celebrate Wednesday after school as they hosted a community and family engagement night to mark the start of the end of a school year.
“I’m excited,” said Smith Principal Bobbie Reeders as she showed off a photo of the school’s band, recently winners of Sweepstakes at UIL competition.
She was quick to point out the groups of students – National Junior Honor Society and AVID class leaders – welcoming guests and serving cookies and popcorn.
Superintendent King Davis stood in the midst of vendor tables set up in the cafeteria and welcomed guests.
He looked around, finding students, school staff members and families and urged them especially to continue to commit to the school term, what he called the fourth quarter of the school year.
Annual STAAR testing and other assessments are coming up, along with other culminating events and it’s a great time, he said, to remember the importance of showing up and putting forth the best effort.
Maybe no one in the cafeteria was prouder than Sheila Hodges, the school’s parent liaison who coordinated the parent and community engagement event.
The idea, she said, was to offer up to family members the services available through the school, the school district and the community and to do it in a fun, celebratory environment.
Fort Hood adopt-a-school soldiers joined Men in Black greeters, Killeen ISD police officers and many student leadership groups to welcome guests in what felt like the start of a school year.
Vendors offered up information about mental health care, parent leadership and volunteer information, as well as Smith counselors ready to offer information about registration for school.
Throughout the evening, music played and school staff members gave away donated gifts.
